Grain entrapment occurs when a person sinks into flowing or settling grain and becomes immobilized, typically in a bin, silo, or hopper. The grain behaves like a fluid under certain conditions, exerting pressure that can pin limbs, restrict breathing, and prevent self-rescue. Most incidents happen in storage structures 8 to 40 feet deep, where a person may descend 2 to 6 feet into grain within seconds.
The physics behind entrapment involves grain bridge collapse and bridging failure. When grain is stored, it naturally forms an arch or bridge above the lowest points. A person walking on the surface may break through this bridge, causing surrounding grain to flow inward and downward. Wheat, corn, soybeans, and other grains with fine particles are especially dangerous because they compact tightly around a trapped body and restrict movement far more than coarser materials.
Rescue is extremely difficult because removing the grain without proper equipment can cause further collapse and suffocation. The weight of grain pressing on a chest can exceed 600 pounds of pressure per square foot, making it impossible for a trapped person to lift themselves or breathe deeply. Professional grain rescue requires trained teams with pneumatic or vacuum extraction tools designed to remove grain around the victim while stabilizing the surrounding mass.
Most entrapments occur during routine maintenance, inspection, or unclogging operations rather than during normal grain handling. Workers often enter bins alone and without harnesses, treating the task as low-risk when it carries acute hazard. Grain that has become compacted or crusted on the surface presents particular risk, as walking on it can trigger sudden collapse.
Regulatory bodies in the United States, Canada, and the European Union classify grain entrapment as a confined space hazard. OSHA standards require confined space entry procedures, atmospheric monitoring, rescue equipment, and trained standby personnel for any grain storage work. The term 'grain entrapment' distinguishes this specific hazard from other grain handling risks such as auger entanglement or dust explosion.
