A travois is a low, primitive sled used to haul logs downhill or across short distances in forest work. Unlike a full sled that lifts both ends of a log clear of the ground, a travois supports one end on its bed while the opposite end trails behind, scoring the earth. The sled itself is typically made of two parallel wooden beams, sometimes with crosspieces to spread the load, and is drawn by a single draft animal, usually a horse or oxen.
The key advantage of the travois lay in its simplicity and minimal friction. By letting the trailing end of the log drag on the ground, much of the log's weight remained on the earth rather than on the sled, reducing the load the animal had to pull. This meant lighter construction and less wear on the sled itself. The travois worked best on gentle slopes or relatively level ground; on steep terrain, gravity did the work and the animal served mainly to control the descent. It was particularly suited to extracting logs from small clearings or when moving timber short distances to a mill or landing.
A travois differs sharply from a full logging sled or sleigh, which raised both ends and required far more horsepower. It also differs from modern equipment like the log arch, which became standard in the early 20th century and lifted the forward log end to minimize soil disturbance and rolling resistance. The name itself is believed to derive from French-Canadian trappers and loggers, though its exact etymology remains uncertain in standard trade literature.
The travois is now almost entirely obsolete in mechanized forestry. Mechanized skidders and cable systems replaced it by the mid-20th century, especially as timber harvests grew larger and distances longer. However, the term survives in historical accounts of colonial and frontier logging operations, particularly in North America, where it remained in use into the early 1900s in remote or small-scale work. A few specialized or heritage operations may still employ similar principles for low-impact timber extraction in sensitive environments.
