To fay is to fit two pieces of timber together so tightly that they lie flush with no visible gap between them. The joint must be precise enough that light cannot pass through, and the surfaces must be planed or shaped to match exactly. This is foundational work in carpentry, joinery, and timber-frame construction, where structural integrity and weather resistance both depend on tight fits.
The term appears most often in traditional timber framing and shipbuilding, where fayed joints bear load or must shed water. A fayed joint requires that both mating surfaces be flat, square, or curved in complementary ways. If one piece is warped or the cut is inaccurate, the joint will rock or leave gaps; the wood must then be planed again or shims inserted to force a fay. In modern factory production, CNC machining can hold the tolerances needed to fay large numbers of pieces consistently.
Faying is distinct from merely pressing two pieces together. It means the surfaces conform so well that they touch along their full area, not just at edges or high spots. In timber joints that will be glued, a good fay is essential: glue spreads evenly and the joint sets with full strength. In dry-fit or mechanical joints, faying prevents movement and rattle.
The word derives from Old French fayer, meaning to fit or suit. It survives mainly in timber trades and in technical standards for wood construction. Metalworkers and engineers use similar language when they speak of surfaces that mate or seat. The principle is the same: precision fit, not force fit.
