A felling head is a specialized hydraulic attachment mounted on the end of a mobile crane or excavator boom that cuts down trees and processes them in a single operation. Instead of a hook or bucket, the machine carries a powerful saw mechanism (typically a circular saw or chainsaw arrangement) combined with feeding rollers or grippers that hold and orient the tree as it is cut. This allows a single operator to fell, limb, and sometimes buck timber without manual chainsaw work or repositioning equipment.
The cutting assembly contains a hydraulic motor driving a saw blade or chain at high speed, usually 3,000 to 6,000 rpm depending on the blade diameter and tooth pitch. Saw diameters typically range from 600 mm to 900 mm for heavy-duty models. The rollers that grip the tree stem are also hydraulically powered and can apply enough force to hold a tree steady during the cut without crushing the wood. Pressure settings are adjusted to match wood density and stem diameter, typically between 150 and 250 bar.
Felling heads are used in two main contexts. In mechanized harvesting on larger operations, they mount on purpose-built harvesters that also sort and measure logs. In smaller-scale or salvage work, they attach to standard mobile cranes, allowing contractors to work in tight spaces like urban tree removal or thinning operations where traditional felling would be unsafe or impractical. The boom height and reach determine the maximum tree height that can be safely handled, usually limited to 15 to 25 meters depending on equipment class.
Common wear and failure modes
Saw blade dulling is the most frequent maintenance issue, requiring resharpening or blade replacement every 8 to 16 hours depending on wood hardness and debris content. Roller wear develops as crushed bark and dirt accumulate, reducing grip and causing slippage; worn rollers must be replaced as a set to maintain even pressure. Hydraulic hose abrasion is common where lines route near moving parts, and burst hoses under load create downtime and hazard. The cutting edge experiences binding if wood movement is not controlled, sometimes snapping teeth or stalling the motor.
Felling heads are most cost-effective on operations where a single machine can move between multiple sites quickly, or where traditional tree felling poses safety or access obstacles. They reduce labor input per tree but depend on consistent, high-pressure hydraulic supply and skilled operation to position the cut correctly. Operators must understand wood grain and taper to avoid binding, and must maintain sharp blades and clean rollers to prevent costly delays and equipment damage.
