A fire grenade is a glass sphere, typically 6 to 8 inches in diameter, filled with liquid chemical agents intended to suppress small fires by rupturing on impact or when heated. The device predates modern pressurized extinguishers and was common in industrial buildings, ships, and rail cars from the 1870s through the mid-20th century. When a fire is detected, the grenade is either thrown directly into flames or hung in a location where rising heat will cause the glass to crack and release its contents.
The internal chemistry varied by manufacturer and era. Common formulations included carbon tetrachloride (CTC), which suppresses flame through cooling and oxygen displacement; sodium bicarbonate solutions; and salt brines. Some grenades contained methyl bromide or other halogenated hydrocarbons. The bulb itself was typically thin soda-lime glass, designed to fracture readily but strong enough to withstand normal handling. Metal caps and sometimes cardboard sleeves held the glass safely in place before discharge.
Why they fell from use
Fire grenades became obsolete for good reason. Carbon tetrachloride, the most effective agent, is highly toxic and causes liver damage, kidney failure, and cancer with chronic exposure; it was banned in most industrial safety applications by the 1970s. Even brief contact with its vapors can produce dizziness and organ damage. Methyl bromide and related halons, while effective suppressants, damage the ozone layer and are now restricted under the Montreal Protocol. The unreliable nature of glass rupture also meant grenades sometimes failed to discharge when needed, leaving operators with a useless tool in an active fire.
Modern dry-chemical and wet-chemical extinguishers replaced grenades because they offer user control, faster deployment, better visibility during use, and chemicals with known toxicity profiles. A pressurized hand-held unit allows the operator to aim, control flow, and stop discharge immediately, whereas a thrown grenade releases its full charge uncontrollably and may not reach the fire's seat. Facilities with historical grenades still mounted on walls should treat them as hazardous waste; the chemicals inside have degraded unpredictably, and the containers pose both chemical and glass-fragment risks.
Grenades remain visible in period photographs and the occasional preserved industrial interior as a reminder of industrial safety's darker chapters. They appear in fire-safety histories and occupational health archives as a cautionary example of solutions that worked thermodynamically but failed when measured against long-term worker health. Anyone encountering an original fire grenade in a vintage building should report it to the facility manager for safe removal rather than attempt inspection or use.
