A fire hydrant is a vertical pipe assembly that connects to a municipal water main and provides rapid access to pressurized water for firefighting. The barrel, typically made of ductile iron or cast iron, sits above ground with the main valve buried 4 to 6 feet below the surface. The upper section houses connection ports, a drainage valve, and an outlet cap sized to accept standard fire hose threads, usually 2.5 inches in North America.

The internal valve operates via a long stem that extends from above ground down to the shut-off gate. When the stem is turned, a wrench or hydrant key rotates it to open the subterranean valve, allowing water from the main to flow up through the barrel and out through the outlet. Hydrants are pressurized during normal operation; a firefighter removes the outlet cap and threads a fire hose connection directly onto the exposed port.

Variants and placement

Wet-barrel hydrants, used in warm climates, remain full and ready to discharge immediately. Dry-barrel hydrants, common in freezing regions, must be opened slightly to fill before the main outlet port can be used; they drain automatically when closed to prevent ice formation in the barrel. Color coding varies by jurisdiction: red indicates a public hydrant, yellow typically marks one supplied by a private main, and blue or green may denote a non-potable source or low-flow hydrant in some systems.

Hydrants must be spaced no more than 500 feet apart in urban areas and positioned at street corners or mid-block along routes accessible to fire apparatus. Obstruction by parked vehicles, snow, or landscaping reduces response effectiveness; many jurisdictions require clear zones of 3 to 5 feet around the hydrant barrel.

Common failure modes include frozen stems, corrosion of internal seals, clogged outlets, and loss of main pressure due to breaks elsewhere in the distribution line. Regular testing and maintenance, including exercise of the valve stem and flushing, catch problems before they matter. The hydrant name derives from the Greek hydro, water, and reflects its simple function as the visible link between underground supply and the surface world where water is needed most urgently.
