A firestream is the coherent jet of water, foam, or other extinguishing agent discharged from a nozzle under pressure to attack a fire. Unlike a mist or spray, a firestream maintains its form and velocity over distance, allowing operators to direct the medium with precision into the base and body of the flame. The stream must travel far enough to reach the seat of the fire while retaining sufficient force to penetrate the fire load and cool the fuel below ignition temperature.
Water streams are the most common, delivered through standard nozzles at pressures typically between 40 and 100 psi, depending on hose diameter and pump output. Class A foam concentrates mixed into water create streams with better penetration and knockdown than plain water alone, particularly in wood and paper fires. The nozzle design determines stream characteristics: a solid-stream or smoothbore nozzle produces a compact, dense stream; fog nozzles atomize water into fine droplets that absorb heat more rapidly but lack reach.
Stream degradation and control
A firestream loses coherence as it travels, especially against wind or when it strikes obstacles. The distance at which a stream becomes too diffuse for effective firefighting depends on nozzle type, pressure, and atmospheric conditions, typically ranging from 30 to 60 feet for solid streams. Operators must also account for reaction force: a solid 1.5-inch stream from a nozzle at 100 psi produces significant recoil that can push a handheld nozzle off target.Firestream technique differs by fuel type and compartment geometry. Attacking a structural fire from below often means directing the stream upward and into the fire's overhead, allowing water to fall and accumulate. In vehicle fires, the stream must penetrate sheet metal and reach the fuel tank or engine compartment. Too violent an application can scatter burning debris and spread fire; too gentle a stream fails to reach the seat.
Backup lines and defensive positions depend on firestream reach and power. A master stream from a ground ladder pipe or elevated platform can deliver 500 to 2000 gpm over longer distances than handheld lines, making it essential for structure fires or exposures beyond reach of personnel streams. Conversely, a 1-inch booster line with a fog nozzle may be sufficient for overhaul or mop-up phases where lower flow rates prevent water damage to unburned contents.
