Fork oil is a light hydraulic fluid that fills the inner tubes of a motorcycle or bicycle fork, where it serves as both a lubricant and a damping medium. It flows through ports and orifices in the fork's piston rod as the suspension compresses and extends, converting kinetic energy into heat and controlling how fast the fork moves.

The oil sits inside the fork leg, typically in a volume of 200 to 400 milliliters per side on a standard street bike, though dirt bikes and high-performance machines may use different quantities. Most fork oils are mineral-based hydrocarbons refined to very low viscosity, commonly SAE 5, 10, or 15 weight, though some premium forks use synthetics. Viscosity is the critical property; thinner oil allows faster movement and a softer ride, while thicker oil stiffens damping and improves support under load.

Fork oil degrades over time as it gets hotter, oxidizes, and collects fine metal particles and dust from the fork seals. Dirty or aged fork oil becomes gummy, loses its flow properties, and causes the suspension to feel harsh or unpredictable. Oil level also matters; too little reduces damping and allows metal-to-metal contact, while too much causes excessive resistance and heat. A fork that feels wallowy, bottoms out easily, or rebounds slowly after a bump often needs an oil change and possibly a viscosity adjustment.

Choosing and changing fork oil

Different motorcycle models and riding styles call for different weights. Sport bikes often use 10 or 15 weight oil for responsive damping, while cruisers may use heavier oils for stability. Manufacturers specify the correct oil type and level in the service manual; mixing brands and weights within the same fork is acceptable, but starting fresh with new oil of the correct viscosity gives the most predictable results. A fork oil change requires removing the fork leg from the frame, draining the old fluid, cleaning the interior if necessary, and refilling to the manufacturer's specified height, usually measured with the fork fully collapsed and the air bleed screw open.

The term "fork oil" itself is straightforward: it lubricates the fork, and historically the distinction mattered because early suspensions used simple light machine oil that often leaked and broke down quickly. Modern fork oils are formulated to resist oxidation, suppress foaming, and protect the delicate seals that keep the oil in and contamination out. A fork with weeping seals loses oil slowly and air enters the tube, compromising damping until the oil level drops below the work zone entirely.
