A trunklid is the hinged panel that forms the outer closure of a vehicle's trunk or boot, typically mounted at the rear of the car and secured by hinges along its upper edge. It seals the cargo area from weather and theft while providing access for loading and unloading. The panel itself is usually stamped steel on conventional vehicles, though modern designs increasingly use aluminum or composite materials to reduce weight.

The trunklid operates through a combination of mechanical and sometimes electronic systems. A latch mechanism at the front edge (nearest the cabin) engages with a striker mounted on the body frame; this latch is released either by a manual cable pulled from inside the car or by an electric actuator controlled remotely or via a button. The hinges must be strong enough to support the panel's full weight without sagging, and are typically bolted to both the trunklid and the body structure at the rear quarter panel junction.

Structural and finish considerations

The outer surface of the trunklid is part of the vehicle's visible body, so it receives the same primer, paint, and clearcoat treatments as the rest of the exterior. The inner surface is typically left bare or primed only, and may include reinforcing ribs or mounting points for the latch mechanism. Weatherstripping is glued around the trunklid's perimeter to prevent water and air infiltration. On some vehicles, a gas strut or hydraulic damper assists in holding the panel open.

Common failure modes include corrosion along the bottom edge where water collects, hinge sagging that causes the panel to misalign with the body gap, and latch mechanism wear that makes closure difficult or causes the trunk to pop open while driving. Misalignment can also result from impact damage or poor adjustment during manufacturing or repair. The panel's outer surface is vulnerable to dents, scratches, and paint damage because of its exposed location.

In crash testing, trunklid integrity is less critical than the hood or doors, but it must not buckle inward or separate during impact. On some vehicles, the trunklid is designed to be easily removable for repair or replacement, with quick-release bolts replacing permanent welds, while others require cutting hinges and welding new ones. The term itself derives from the older 'trunk' designation for cargo compartments in American English, contrasting with the British term 'boot lid' for the same component.
