An extra rail in addition to the third rail (live rail) which is used for current return purposes, mainly by London Underground, because of problems caused by using the running rails for current return underground.

The fourth rail is a dedicated conductor rail running alongside the live third rail on London Underground trains. While the third rail supplies power at 630 volts DC, the fourth rail completes the circuit by accepting return current from the train's traction motor back to the substation. This separation is essential because using the two running rails for return current, as some railways do, causes serious corrosion and interference underground.
London Underground adopted the fourth rail system because the tunnels presented a hostile environment for conventional current return. In the damp, confined spaces of deep-level lines, stray currents flowing through steel running rails accelerate oxidation and create electrochemical problems in the tunnel structure itself. The fourth rail, insulated from the running rails and the tunnel walls, confines return current to a controlled path. This design became standard on the deep lines and was retained even on sub-surface lines for consistency.
The fourth rail sits between the two running rails, supported by ceramic or cast-iron insulators at regular intervals. Its profile is smaller than the third rail but similarly robust, typically made of aluminium alloy or steel. Train bogies carry two contact shoes that straddle both the live third rail and the fourth rail simultaneously, maintaining electrical continuity as the train moves. Loss of contact with either rail will cut power.
The fourth rail is entirely passive from the driver's perspective; it requires no control input and no monitoring. However, it cannot tolerate obstruction. Leaves, debris, or track workers standing on it will not cause immediate failure, but accumulation of conductive material can create return paths that bypass the fourth rail entirely, reintroducing the stray current problem the system was designed to prevent. Regular cleaning of both conductor rails is therefore routine maintenance.
The fourth rail is unique to London Underground among major metro systems. Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo use single conductor rails with various return methods, and most mainline railways accept running-rail return as an engineering trade-off. This makes the fourth rail a distinctly British engineering choice, born from the particular geology and tunnelling methods of the Victorian era.
