A wye is a Y-shaped track junction used to reverse the direction of a locomotive or train consist without needing a turntable or a full loop. The three legs of the wye meet at or near a common point, allowing a train entering from one direction to exit in a different direction. The term comes directly from the letter Y, which describes the track layout. In rail yards, sidings, and branch lines, a wye lets crews reposition equipment efficiently on limited real estate.
The standard wye consists of two diverging switches (points) that branch from a single track into two separate routes, which then rejoin at a third switch. A train backs into one leg, moves forward through the junction geometry, and exits facing the opposite way. The angles and radii of the curved sections must be designed for the maximum axle load and speed of the vehicles using it. Sharper angles require slower speeds and can increase wear on wheel flanges and rails.
Common configurations and limitations
Rural branch lines and industrial spurs often feature simple wyes where space is available. Urban rail yards sometimes use compact wyes with tighter geometry. The main constraint is that a wye requires deliberate shunting moves and cannot be crossed at main-line speeds; trains must slow to switching speed, typically 5 to 15 mph depending on design and clearances. Long trains may have difficulty threading through a poorly designed wye because the lead unit clears the junction while the rear cars remain on the entry leg.
Compared to a turntable, a wye is cheaper to build and maintain, but it consumes more track space and requires more deliberate operating moves. A turntable is preferred for rapid reversal of single locomotives or small consists, whereas a wye handles longer trains and is used in routine yard operations. Some facilities use both: a turntable for engines and a wye for working cars through the yard.
Maintenance on a wye focuses on the switch points, guard rails, and the curved sections where rail wear concentrates on the outer rail. The switches must be kept clean of ice, snow, and debris to ensure they move crisply and lock positively. Derailments at a wye are often caused by misaligned points, excessive speed, or incompatible wheel geometry meeting the tight curves.
