gon: open freight car for bulk loads
A gon is a railroad freight car with four or more sides, an open top, and a flat deck, used for hauling bulk commodities that do not require weather protection. Unlike boxcars, gons have no roof; unlike flatcars, they have raised sides to contain their cargo. The sides typically stand 2 to 4 feet high, depending on the car's design and the commodity class it serves. Most gons are 40 to 50 feet long and carry loads ranging from 60 to 100 tons.
The chief advantage of a gon is its speed to load and unload. Bulk materials like coal, ore, gravel, scrap metal, and crushed stone can be shoveled or dumped in from the top, then gravity-discharged through bottom hoppers or side gates when the car reaches its destination. This open design makes gons ideal for short-haul and regional routes where quick turnaround matters more than protection from weather. A coal gon in the eastern United States will cycle between mine and power plant dozens of times per year.
High-side gons have taller walls (5 to 6 feet) and are used for lighter materials like wood chips or aluminum scrap. Low-side gons handle denser cargo such as iron ore or aggregate. Covered gons, which feature removable tarps or solid covers, bridge the gap between open gons and boxcars for commodities that need some protection but still benefit from open-top loading. Aluminum gons have become common on lines that serve automotive and light manufacturing plants, since they are lighter than steel and reduce fuel cost per ton-mile.
The term "gondola" itself has murky origins; railroads began using it in the late 19th century, possibly borrowed from Venice's flat-bottomed boats or simply adopted as a descriptive name for the car's open, trough-like shape. The abbreviation "gon" is universal in rail yards and dispatch centers. On waybills and in train consist reports, a gon is coded by its side height and capacity, such as '50 ft gon, 100T' or 'HSG' for high-side gondola.
Gon maintenance focuses on the floor and sidewalls, which experience heavy wear and corrosion from wet, abrasive cargo. Wooden floors are still common and require regular replacement; concrete or rubber-laminate decks last longer but cost more. Bottom hoppers and gates are frequent failure points, especially when loaded with frozen material or frozen moisture. A well-kept gon fleet moves commodities with minimal downtime; a neglected one becomes a yard bottleneck.
