A froth pack is a single-use aerosol dispenser holding two-component spray polyurethane foam that expands on contact with air or moisture. Unlike drum-fed spray rigs that require a compressor and hose system, a froth pack delivers precombined A-side (polyol) and B-side (isocyanate) chemicals through a valve at trigger pressure. The user simply aims and sprays, making these cans the standard tool for small-scale sealing, gapping, and insulation work on job sites where a full spray rig is not economical or practical.
The typical froth pack contains between 12 and 24 fluid ounces of foam components and produces roughly 30 to 50 times its liquid volume when expanded. Pressure inside the can is sustained by a propellant gas, usually a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) or hydrocarbon blend. As the trigger is pressed, the propellant forces the pre-blended resin upward through a straw to the nozzle, where the reaction generates bubbles and sets chemically within minutes. Quality varies significantly between manufacturers and product age; old or improperly stored cans often deliver foam that expands poorly, separates, or fails to cure.
Froth packs are graded by yield and cure speed. Standard-yield cans expand moderately and are used for filling wall cavities, around window and door frames, and sealing mechanical penetrations. High-yield variants exist but are less common in retail distribution. Cure time ranges from 8 to 24 hours depending on product formulation, humidity, and temperature; cooler conditions slow the reaction significantly. Expansion can also vary: low-pressure formulations creep less into finished spaces but fill gaps more slowly, while high-pressure cans expand aggressively and can bow out drywall or bend studs if over-applied.
Common failure modes and limitations
The most frequent problem is uneven or failed foam when cans are shaken insufficiently before use or when the straw sits empty in old stock. Foam that comes out as liquid or thin spray indicates propellant loss or separation of components. Conversely, overshooting a gap with high-yield foam creates thick extrusion that is difficult to trim flush and wastes material. Temperature sensitivity is real: applying froth pack in freezing conditions or in direct sunlight can produce weak, brittle cure. The nozzle also clogs easily if not cleaned immediately after use, rendering the can unusable despite fuel remaining inside.
Froth packs dominate residential and light commercial work because they need no capital equipment and are purchased per-job as a consumable. Professional spray contractors and insulators use drum systems for volume work, but even they keep froth packs on hand for tight spaces, high-reach gaps, and small repairs where dragging hoses is inefficient. The chemistry and pressurization system inside a froth pack are fundamentally identical to those in a spray rig; the difference is convenience versus control. The term itself reflects the visual result: you are literally packing bubbles of foam into a void.
