The process of producing a smooth flat layer of concrete or similar material.

Screeding: flattening wet concrete to a dead level

Screeding is the process of striking off excess concrete, mortar, or similar material from a freshly placed surface to achieve a flat, level finish at a predetermined height. A screeding tool, called a screed or screed board, is drawn across the wet material using a sawing or chopping motion, with its bottom edge riding on guides or forms set to the finished elevation. The tool removes high spots and fills low spots, leaving a surface true to the specified plane.

The most common screed is a straight edge, traditionally made from wood (often a 2x4 or 2x6 timber) but increasingly from aluminum. For larger pours, mechanical screeds powered by gasoline or electric motors ride on rails or stringlines and move across the slab automatically. Vibratory screeds, which oscillate side to side as they advance, are particularly effective at consolidating concrete and producing a denser surface finish.

Accuracy and timing matter

Screeding must happen when concrete has begun to stiffen but remains workable, typically within 30 minutes of placement in normal conditions. Too early and the screed will sink; too late and the concrete becomes difficult to work and may tear apart. The height guides, or screed rails, must be set with precision using levels, lasers, or string lines. Even a 1/8 inch variance across a 20 foot span will cause problems for flooring, equipment installation, or drainage.

Poor screeding results in surfaces that are wavy, crowned (high in the middle), or dished (low in the middle). These defects are expensive to remediate because they require grinding, mudjacking, or in severe cases, removal and replacement. Low spots collect standing water on floors and parking lots. High spots create trip hazards and interfere with door clearances and equipment mounting.

Screeding is distinct from finishing, which comes after and includes troweling, brooming, or polishing. On flat work like parking lots and warehouse floors where surface smoothness must meet ASTM F1155 standards, screeding accuracy directly determines whether the finished product will pass inspection.
