FWD: engine power sent to the front wheels
Front-wheel drive means the engine's power goes to the front wheels, which both steer and propel the vehicle. The front axle carries the weight of the engine, transmission, and fuel tank, so it handles both directional control and acceleration. This layout has dominated passenger cars since the 1980s because it maximizes interior space, improves traction in snow and ice, and costs less to manufacture than rear-wheel drive platforms.
The mechanical arrangement places the transaxle (a combined transmission and differential) ahead of the front axle centerline. Unequal-length drive shafts run from the transaxle to each front hub; the inner joint near the engine is typically a tripod or ball-type constant-velocity joint, while the outer joint at the wheel is usually a Rzeppa or double-offset design to handle the turning angles. This geometry creates torque steer, a pulling sensation during hard acceleration, especially in older or poorly tuned systems.
Handling and grip
FWD vehicles naturally understeer when pushed to their limit, meaning the front end washes wide rather than the rear sliding out. Drivers often find this forgiving compared to rear-wheel drive. However, the added mass at the front and the demand placed on front tires for both steering input and traction can cause faster tire wear and heat buildup than in rear-drive cars. In severe winter conditions or on loose surfaces, the steering feedback can feel heavy and numb because traction demands are high.The term FWD is used in specifications, advertising, and technical discussion to distinguish from RWD (rear-wheel drive), AWD (all-wheel drive), and historical midship or rear-engine layouts. Enthusiasts and engineers recognize that FWD priorities differ fundamentally from RWD; space efficiency and everyday practicality favor FWD, while weight distribution and performance dynamics often favor RWD in sports cars. Most modern sedans, hatchbacks, and crossovers are FWD because the layout suits their market requirements and manufacturing constraints.
