McLaren Automotive is a British manufacturer of high-performance sports cars and supercars, headquartered in Woking, Surrey. The company builds mid-engined vehicles with carbon fiber chassis, twin-turbocharged engines, and price tags typically ranging from 200,000 to over 1 million pounds. Each car is hand-assembled and tested to exacting tolerances.

The McLaren brand originated in Formula 1 racing through the McLaren Racing team, founded in 1963. The company built its first road car, the F1, in 1993: a 627-horsepower 3.2-liter V12 machine with a central driving position and a top speed of 240 mph. This model established McLaren's engineering philosophy: lightweight construction, race-derived drivetrains, and minimal sound deadening to reduce mass.

Modern Production Range

Current McLaren road cars use variations of 3.8-liter and 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engines producing 540 to 720 horsepower, depending on model. Carbon fiber monocoques form the chassis; aluminum and composite materials reduce overall weight to 1,200 to 1,400 kilograms. Models include the Sport Series (entry level), Super Series (track-focused), and Ultimate Series (extreme performance). Gearboxes are seven-speed dual-clutch units sourced from specialized suppliers.

McLaren vehicles are sold through a restricted global dealer network rather than mass production channels. Annual production runs to roughly 4,000 units across all models. Quality control involves dyno testing, thermal imaging inspections, and multi-stage assembly verification at the Production Centre in Woking.

The company remains distinct from its racing division, McLaren Racing, which competes in Formula 1 and other series. Road car engineering and race engineering share some personnel and aerodynamic principles, but operate under separate management structures. This separation allows McLaren Automotive to serve commercial clients while the racing team pursues championship competition.
