headliner: the fabric ceiling that hides your car's roof structure
The headliner is the interior fabric panel that covers the underside of a vehicle's roof, creating the visible ceiling in the cabin. It spans from the windshield back to the rear window, typically covering the entire roof area and extending partway down the side pillars. Its primary function is aesthetic: it conceals the raw structural elements, wiring, insulation, and mounting points that would otherwise be exposed to occupants. Beyond looks, it also provides acoustic dampening and thermal insulation, absorbing engine and road noise while helping regulate cabin temperature.
Modern headliners are typically made from a nonwoven polyester or polypropylene base fabric laminated to a foam backing layer, usually melamine or polyurethane foam. This sandwich construction provides both the soft surface feel and the acoustic absorption necessary in a vehicle interior. The fabric finish varies: velour was standard for decades but has largely been replaced by cloth blends and microfiber that resist staining and wear better. Some premium vehicles use suede or leather-faced headliners. The foam thickness typically ranges from 6 to 12 millimeters, with heavier foam used in luxury vehicles where noise isolation is prioritized.
The headliner is adhered to the roof structure using contact cement or spray adhesive, applied to the roof panel before the headliner is positioned and pressed into place. This process is done before the doors, windows, and roof rails are installed, since the headliner must be tucked around and glued to all structural edges and apertures. Installation requires careful alignment to avoid wrinkles or air bubbles, which are difficult or impossible to correct after the adhesive sets. Some headliners include integrated features: mounting points for dome lights, assist grips, sunroof frames, and HVAC vents must be precisely cut and reinforced during manufacturing.
Common failures and wear
Headliner degradation typically begins with sagging: the fabric separates from the foam or the adhesive bond fails, causing the panel to sag visibly from the roof. This most often happens in vehicles exposed to heat cycling and high humidity, particularly in the front corners near the windshield where thermal stress is greatest. The foam itself can deteriorate over ten to fifteen years, losing structural integrity and becoming brittle. Staining, tears, and fading are surface damage issues, while delamination (the separation of the fabric from the foam layer itself) makes the headliner appear bubbly or wrinkled before actual sagging occurs.
The term "headliner" derives simply from its position at the head of the interior space, a straightforward descriptive name that has been used since early automotive interiors. In the trade, repairs are typically handled through upholstery shops rather than general mechanics, since replacement or regluing requires specialized materials and techniques. A complete headliner replacement usually requires partial disassembly of trim pieces and is labor intensive, making it one of the more expensive cosmetic repairs on a vehicle. Some vehicles allow spot repair by injecting adhesive behind localized sags, a cheaper option that works if delamination is minimal.
