G st: the reversible knit that looks the same both sides
Garter stitch is the simplest hand or machine knit structure, made by working knit stitches in every row (or every round on a circular machine). Unlike stockinette or rib, which create directional fabrics with distinct front and back faces, garter stitch looks identical on both sides: a bumpy, horizontal ridge pattern that repeats every two rows. This reversibility makes it useful for garments where both surfaces will be visible, such as scarves, blankets, or rolled edges.
The visual texture comes from the way stitches sit when knitted in one direction only. Each row of knit loops creates a horizontal bar when viewed from the finished fabric side. On a flat bed machine, garter stitch requires no stitch transfer or complicated cam settings, just continuous knit stitches back and forth. Hand knitters produce it by knitting every row; on circular machines, alternate rounds of knit and purl can approximate the effect, though true garter requires a ribber attachment to produce the purl rows simultaneously.
Garter stitch uses more yarn than stockinette at the same gauge because the fabric is thicker and shorter per unit of yarn consumed. A gauge of 10 courses per inch in garter might correspond to 15 or more in stockinette. This density makes garter stitch stiffer and heavier, with less drape; it does not cling and holds its shape well. These properties suit it to structured pieces but limit use in fitted garments where fluidity matters.

Beginners often start with garter stitch because it requires only one stitch type and no shaping knowledge.
