Martindale: abrasion test that measures how long fabric survives rubbing

A Martindale is a machine that tests how well a fabric resists abrasion by rubbing it repeatedly against a standard surface under controlled pressure. The test generates a number, also called the Martindale value, that tells you how many cycles of rubbing the fabric can endure before visible damage appears. This number has become the industry standard for specifying upholstery durability, particularly for sofas, chairs, and heavy-use contract furnishings where fabric breakdown from daily friction is a real concern.

The machine itself performs a flat, circular rubbing motion. A sample of the test fabric is held against a reference material (typically wool worsted cloth) while a weighted head applies downward pressure, usually between 9 and 12 newtons. The rubbing continues until the fabric shows noticeable pilling, fuzzing, or thinning. A rating of 10,000 Martindale cycles means the fabric survived 10,000 back-and-forth rubs before failure became visible. Casual domestic upholstery might rate 15,000 to 25,000 cycles; heavy-contract furniture typically requires 40,000 or higher.

The test follows international standards, most commonly ISO 12947 or the older ASTM D4157. Different variations exist: you can test for color change, loss of tensile strength, or pilling separately, but the cycle count to visible damage remains the primary specification. The equipment is expensive and usually found in textile testing laboratories rather than in mills or fabric warehouses, so manufacturers test their finished fabrics and publish the Martindale rating as a selling point.

The method has limitations. It measures flat rubbing only, not the complex combination of stresses that upholstery actually experiences, so Martindale numbers don't perfectly predict real-world performance. Fiber type, yarn construction, and weave density all affect results; a loose knit fabric might score poorly while a tight canvas scores very high, yet the loose knit might wear differently in use. The test also doesn't account for chemical attack from spills or the effects of repeated crushing under sitting pressure.

The test is named after the Martindale abrasion tester, a device developed in the textile industry decades ago. It has become the default shorthand for fabric durability in upholstery specification sheets, contract furniture contracts, and retail fabric labels. When a furniture maker claims their sofa upholstery is "suitable for heavy use," they are usually pointing to a Martindale rating of 40,000 or above, though no official threshold defines "heavy use" across the industry.
