GA

Initialism of general aviation.

GA: any aircraft that isn't a commercial airliner

General aviation covers every aircraft operation outside the scheduled airline and military sectors. This includes private ownership, charter flights, aerial work such as crop spraying or pipeline inspection, flight training, air taxi services, and corporate transport. The category spans everything from a single-engine Cessna 172 to a twin-turbine business jet, united only by their exclusion from the commercial airline world.

The maintenance demands on GA aircraft differ markedly from those on transport category machines. A GA piston engine may run 2,000 hours between overhauls; a turbine engine in an airliner runs 5,000 to 10,000 hours. GA mechanics work with simpler systems, fewer redundancies, and lighter regulatory oversight than their airline counterparts. Many GA owners perform their own maintenance under the preventive maintenance category, though inspection, engine work, and airworthiness issues require certificated technicians.

Economics and regulation

GA sustains itself on utility and low volume. A single-engine aircraft costs between 250,000 and 500,000 dollars; operating costs run roughly 100 to 150 dollars per hour for fuel and engine reserve. This economics demands that owners or operators stretch component life where regulation permits, rotate between maintenance shops, and manage inventory carefully. The FAA's Part 23 certification standard, recently rewritten, governs GA aircraft design and airworthiness.

The distinction between GA and transport category matters for maintainers because it determines which advisory circulars, airworthiness directives, and certification bases apply. A GA piston twin operates under different rules than a regional turboprop carrying paying passengers. Some GA aircraft fall into special categories: experimental, light-sport, or restricted aircraft, each with its own maintenance framework and documentation requirements.

In practice, GA maintenance shops occupy a different economic and technical space than MRO facilities that service airlines. They depend on owner loyalty, competitive rates, and rapid turnaround. Many are one or two-person operations, some co-located with fixed-base operators at smaller airports. Technical resources, manuals, tooling, training, come from airframe and engine manufacturers, trade organizations like the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, and accumulated field experience within the shop.
