gangue: the rock you throw away to get the metal
Gangue is the valueless mineral material that surrounds and is mixed with ore in a mineral deposit. When you extract metal ore, you are separating a small percentage of valuable mineral (the ore itself) from a much larger mass of useless rock and minerals (the gangue). The ratio varies wildly: a gold ore body might yield only a few grams of metal per ton of rock handled, meaning the gangue represents 99.99% of the material moved.
The composition of gangue depends on the host rock and the geology of the deposit. In a copper porphyry operation, gangue might consist of quartz, feldspar, and clay minerals. In an iron oxide ore, gangue could be silica and alumina-rich rock. In a nickel laterite deposit, you are fighting through iron oxides and silicates to reach the nickel-bearing material. Understanding what you are dealing with matters because different gangue minerals behave differently during crushing, grinding, flotation, and leaching.
Separation and disposal
The entire mineral processing chain exists to separate gangue from ore economically. Gravity separation, flotation, magnetic separation, and leaching all exploit differences in density, surface chemistry, or solubility between the valuable ore minerals and the worthless gangue. What you cannot separate economically becomes tailings, which must be stored, often in tailings ponds or dams. This is expensive and environmentally demanding, so minimizing gangue in your run-of-mine ore (or avoiding ore bodies with very high gangue ratios) directly impacts project economics.
The term comes from Old German Gang, meaning vein or lode. It entered English mining vocabulary centuries ago when miners needed a single word for all the sterile material they had to break and discard to reach the metal-bearing vein. The word is still standard across the industry, from junior exploration companies to major integrated producers.
