A ribbed coal seam is one interrupted by thin layers or bands of slate, shale, or other non-combustible rock running through the coal itself. These bands, called ribs, are typically a few millimetres to several centimetres thick and run roughly parallel to the main strata. They divide the workable coal into separate benches or layers, so a single seam may appear as two or three distinct coal beds separated by slate rather than as one continuous body.

The ribs form during the original peat deposition, usually when temporary flooding or influx of clastic sediment interrupted coal formation. This was common in ancient swamps where water table fluctuations or nearby river channels brought in mud and silt. The result is a geological record of environmental change preserved in the coal sequence. Some ribs are persistent across large areas; others pinch out and reappear unpredictably, making mining difficult.

Mining and valuation implications

Ribbed seams present distinct challenges to the operator. If the ribs are thin and numerous, selective mining becomes necessary: the coal above and below must be worked separately and the slate removed. This increases labour cost and reduces the overall recovery rate from the seam. Thick ribs between thin coal bands may not be worth extracting. Conversely, if the ribs are thin enough, they can sometimes be worked together with the coal and dealt with at the pit head or preparation plant, though this adds to cleaning burden and ash content.

The commercial value of a ribbed seam depends on the thickness and frequency of the ribs. A few thick ribs are often preferable to many thin ones. Historical mining records sometimes cited thickness as a sum of the coal bands alone, excluding the ribs, leading to confusion in seam nomenclature. In assessment and geological reporting, rib thickness and composition must always be noted separately from coal thickness.

The term is particular to coal geology and is not commonly used in metalliferous mining. A seam described as ribbed, spotted, or bony indicates geological variation that affects mining method, equipment layout, and production planning from the outset of extraction.
