In underground mining, an undercast is a fixed duct or box constructed beneath a haulage road or tramway to carry fresh air across that route without mixing it with the return air stream. It serves a critical function in mine ventilation: maintaining separation between intake and return air currents so that fresh air reaches working areas and doesn't bypass back to the return airways. The structure is typically made from wood, metal, or concrete and must be airtight to prevent leakage that would defeat its purpose.

The undercast works in tandem with the overcast, which does the same job above a roadway. Together, these crossing devices allow a mine's ventilation circuit to branch into multiple districts while keeping air flows from short-circuiting. Without them, air traveling from the fan would take the path of least resistance, leaving distant headings starved of fresh air and creating pockets where dangerous gases accumulate. The undercast is favored over the overcast when the height or layout of the roadway makes a structure beneath easier or safer to install and maintain.

Construction and material matter considerably. The duct must withstand the weight of ore carts, roof pressure, and vibration from blasting without developing cracks that allow air to escape around the sides. Ventilation efficiency depends on the seal; even small gaps around edges or joints can significantly reduce airflow to remote areas. In older mines, undercasts were lined with planking sealed with clay or tar. Modern installations more often use sheet steel or reinforced concrete, which are more durable and easier to inspect.

Operational problems typically arise from impact damage, a heavily loaded cart striking the duct, or a fall of roof burying it, and from accumulation of dust and moisture inside, which reduces cross-sectional area. A plugged or damaged undercast forces management to reroute air by other means, often at reduced efficiency. Regular inspection and cleaning are standard maintenance, though access can be difficult depending on where the undercast sits relative to the working road.
