gazar: stiff silk organza for structured garments
Gazar is a lightweight plain-weave fabric made from silk filament yarns, distinguished by its crisp hand and pronounced body. The fabric typically weighs between 40 and 60 grams per square meter, making it substantially lighter than conventional silk taffeta yet maintaining remarkable dimensional stability. The stiffness comes from the way the yarns are twisted and interlaced, combined with the natural properties of raw silk that has received minimal degumming, leaving residual sericin in the fiber.
The plain weave structure, where warp and weft threads pass over and under each other in a one-over-one pattern, is fundamental to gazar's character. Unlike heavier, more densely constructed fabrics, gazar's open weave allows light to pass through while the stiff yarns prevent the fabric from draping softly. The yarn count is typically moderate, around 80 to 100 ends per inch in the warp and similar in the weft. This creates a fabric with excellent crispness but some transparency, making it suitable as an underfacing rather than a standalone fashion fabric in many applications.
In tailoring and garment construction, gazar serves primarily as a foundation layer. It provides structured support in evening wear, particularly in ball gowns where the fabric is used to create volume and hold architectural silhouettes. Milliners use gazar for hat blocking and reinforcement because it accepts steam and heat without losing its dimensional integrity. The fabric also appears in haute couture as an interlining in jackets and coats, where its crispness transfers body and snap to shell fabrics.
Processing and sourcing
Gazar is produced in silk-weaving centers including India, Japan, and to a lesser extent Italy and France. The name derives from Gaza, the historical Mediterranean port city associated with fine textiles, though production has not centered there for centuries. Most gazar mills use degummed raw silk or thrown silk of relatively low twist, which allows the natural stiffness of the fiber to express itself. Some producers lightly finish gazar with sizing or starch to enhance crispness, though a purely gummed version requires careful handling during cutting and sewing because the fabric's structure can be compromised by excessive heat or moisture.The main drawback of gazar is its brittleness in aged or heavily handled state. Repeated folding along the same crease lines can cause creasing that becomes permanent, and prolonged exposure to dry conditions can make the fabric prone to splitting during construction. Seam slippage is also a concern because the plain weave and moderate yarn count mean threads can migrate under tension. These limitations confine gazar's use to technical roles rather than primary fashion applications, and experienced seamstresses typically reinforce seams with small stitches and sometimes French seams to prevent separation.
