To MB, or make bobble, is to create deliberate small knots or tufts on the surface of a fabric during the finishing process. The operator uses a machine fitted with rotating brushes, cards, or wires that catch and lift fibers from the base cloth, then twists or tangles them into small raised balls. These bobbles remain anchored to the fabric surface and create a textured, often pebbly appearance. The technique is most common in woolen and cotton textiles, particularly in knitwear and blankets.
The process differs from napping, which raises fibers uniformly to create a soft pile. With MB, the disturbing action is more aggressive and localized, producing visible three-dimensional clusters rather than a smooth nap. The density and size of bobbles depend on the brush wire gauge, machine speed, and the fiber length and crimp of the base yarn. Merino wool and short-staple cotton produce more pronounced bobbles than long-staple fibers.
Bobbles can pull loose if anchoring is poor, particularly if the base weave is too open or the yarn lacks sufficient crimp to hold the twisted fibers. Over-aggressive machine settings tear rather than tangle the fibers, creating bald spots. Wet or damp fabric resists bobbling because moisture softens the fibers and reduces friction. Synthetic fibers are difficult to bobble consistently because they lack the natural grip of wool or cellulose.
The term bobble itself comes from the verb to bobble, meaning to move up and down in a quick jerking motion. Historically, hand-carding or hand-brushing produced this effect on woolen cloth; modern MB machines automate what was once labor-intensive. The abbreviation is standard in mill and finishing house terminology, though the full phrase is rarely used in everyday speech.
MB is specified in technical specifications by fiber type, bobble density (counted per square inch or centimeter), and height (measured in millimeters). It is both a functional finish, adding insulation and absorbency, and an aesthetic one, giving cloth a distinctive tactile character. Some markets demand heavy MB finishes; others require minimal bobbling to preserve yarn definition and luster.
