A glaze coat is a thin layer of hot bitumen (typically around 25 to 40 pounds per 100 square feet) applied to exposed felt or membrane on a roof after the base plies have been laid. It serves as temporary protection, sealing the surface against water and weather while the next phase of roofing work waits for better conditions, material delivery, or scheduling gaps.
The coating sits between roofing stages. Once base felts are mopped down with bitumen and allowed to cool, the exposed top ply faces the elements. Rain penetrates unprotected felt; UV and foot traffic degrade it. A glaze coat, applied hot from a kettle or distributor truck, creates a waterproof barrier that hardens as it cools. It is nothing more than straight asphalt or coal tar pitch, undiluted and unaugmented.
When and why glaze coats go on
Glaze coats appear most often in multi-phase roof jobs where weather, crew availability, or supply chains introduce weeks or months between stages. On a built-up roof (BUR), for example, the first three or four plies might go down in spring, then work stalls until fall when cap sheet and gravel surfacing material arrives. Rather than leave exposed felt to degrade, the roofer applies a glaze coat. It buys time without sacrificing membrane integrity. On coal tar built-ups, glaze is also used to block off cured plies temporarily before flooding with additional asphalt.
The coat is thin enough that it does not materially add to the roof assembly weight or cost, yet it prevents moisture ingress and extends the life of exposed plies by months. Once the final surfacing stage begins, the glaze is either incorporated into the next bitumen application or, in some cases, roughened to improve adhesion for mopping and new felts.
Common mistakes include applying glaze coat too heavily, which can slow drainage and trap moisture, or applying it in cold weather when bitumen does not flow and cure properly. Equally troublesome is leaving a glaze coat in place for more than a year without maintenance, since ultraviolet and traffic damage eventually exceed the protective benefit. The coat is a pause button, not a permanent finish.
