A sonotube is a rigid, seamless tube made from multiple layers of compressed kraft paper, spirally wound and bonded together. It serves as a disposable form, or mold, for casting concrete columns, footings, and other vertical structural elements. You fill it with wet concrete, let the concrete cure, then strip away the cardboard to reveal the finished concrete post. The tube itself becomes waste, though some contractors attempt recycling.
Standard sonotubes range from 6 inches to 24 inches in diameter, with lengths commonly between 8 and 20 feet, though custom lengths are available. The wall thickness is typically 5/16 inch for diameters up to 12 inches, increasing slightly for larger sizes to resist hydrostatic pressure from the wet concrete load. The compressive strength of the tube itself is not load-bearing; it simply contains the concrete during the pour and initial cure period until the cardboard can be safely removed, usually after 24 to 48 hours depending on concrete set time and ambient conditions.
One critical weakness is moisture sensitivity. If a sonotube sits exposed to rain or wet soil before use, the cardboard absorbs water, weakening the tube wall and risking collapse under the weight of fresh concrete. Field practice requires storing tubes under cover and, for below-grade applications, wrapping the bottom section or coating it with a concrete bonding agent to slow absorption from wet earth. Interior concrete usually sets more evenly and cleanly with a tube than with field-built wooden forms, which is why sonotubes are standard for utility pole footings and deck posts.
Stripping and Surface Quality
Removal of the cardboard shell is straightforward: cut vertical slits with a utility knife and peel the layers away. Because the tube surface does not absorb water like wood, the concrete finish is typically smoother and requires less grinding. However, the tube imparts a slightly textured surface from the paper fibers, which is often acceptable or even desired. Conversely, if a very smooth finish is specified, contractors may line the inside with plastic sheeting before pouring, sacrificing speed for surface quality.
The term "sonotube" is a proprietary name that became genericized; it originated with the Sonoco company. In modern usage, contractors refer to any similar product by the sonotube name regardless of manufacturer. Alternatives include cardboard tubes made by other suppliers and, for heavy-duty or reusable applications, plastic or steel column forms, though these are less common for routine foundation work due to higher cost and handling overhead.
