pug: a mixer that wedges clay into workable paste

A pug is a machine that grinds, mixes, and homogenizes clay by forcing it through a rotating auger inside a tapered chamber. It serves a single critical purpose: preparing raw clay for brick making, tile pressing, or pottery by removing air pockets, breaking up lumps, and achieving uniform moisture and consistency. The clay enters the hopper at the top, travels down around a central screw blade, and exits as a dense, ready-to-mold column at the bottom.

The auger blade is typically cast iron or steel and rotates at 20 to 40 rpm depending on the machine size and clay type. The tapered barrel creates progressively higher pressure as clay moves downward, compacting it and expelling trapped air. Smaller laboratory pugs might handle 50 kg per hour; industrial units for brick plants exceed 20 tonnes per hour. The barrel length usually ranges from 1 to 3 meters, and the internal diameter from 200 mm to over 600 mm on large machines.

The auger blade and barrel lining wear steadily as abrasive clay passes through; replacement blades and wear liners are consumables on any site. Hard stones or dried clay lumps can jam the machine and must be cleared before operation resumes. High-moisture clay will stick; too-dry clay will not compact properly and exits crumbly rather than as a coherent extrusion.

The term pug derives from the old verb "to pug," meaning to work or knead clay by hand or machine. In British pottery and brick trades, "pug mill" has been standard since at least the 19th century, and the machine itself became simply a "pug" in workshop speech. Today it is one of the oldest surviving clay-working machines still in use, and its basic design has remained nearly unchanged for over a century.
