A spring saddle is a curved metal casting or forging that sits atop the journal-box of a railway carriage and carries the weight of the vehicle body through the suspension springs. It acts as the intermediate component between the rigid axlebox housing below and the spring stack above, transferring vertical loads from the carriage frame down through the springs to the wheels and rails.

The saddle wraps around the arch-bar, a curved structural member that forms the top of the journal-box. The springs themselves rest in the saddle's depression or on its upper surface, held in position by the saddle's geometry rather than by bolts or pins. Cast iron was the traditional material, though some designs used forged steel for higher-stress applications. The saddle must be rigid enough to prevent spring flutter but must itself flex slightly to accommodate the uneven settling of springs as the carriage loads shift during operation.

Spring saddles come in two main configurations: symmetrical saddles supporting coil springs or leaf springs arranged centrally, and asymmetrical designs used where springs are mounted off-center or where the carriage frame dictates an unbalanced load path. The curvature and depth of the saddle cavity control how much the springs can shift laterally, which in turn affects ride stability and curve-negotiation behavior.

Wear and failure patterns

The contact zone between saddle and springs experiences fretting wear, surface spalling, and occasionally plastic deformation under heavy braking or rough track. Corrosion at the joint between saddle and journal-box can produce loose bearings or binding. Excessive wear on the saddle surface is often a sign that the spring pack itself has weakened and is settling unevenly. The name reflects the saddle's position and function: it is literally a saddle on which the springs ride.

Spring saddles remain common on freight stock and older carriage fleets. Modern designs have shifted toward integral suspension frames and elastomeric or airbag springing that eliminates the discrete saddle, but on heritage railways and freight lines the component remains a critical wear item requiring regular inspection and replacement.
