ground clearance

The measured distance between a level surface and the lowest part (other than tires or equivalent) of the bottom of a vehicle surmounting that surface.

ground clearance: how high your undercarriage sits

Ground clearance is the vertical distance from the ground to the lowest fixed point on a vehicle's undercarriage when parked on level ground. This measurement excludes tires and includes everything else underneath: the oil pan, transmission casing, exhaust system, suspension components, and any protective skid plates. A typical sedan has 5 to 6 inches of clearance; an SUV or truck might have 8 to 12 inches; a sports car as little as 4 inches.

The lowest point is usually the oil pan on most vehicles, though on some models it may be the transmission, a fuel tank bracket, or a heat shield. Manufacturers measure this on a level surface, and the value they publish represents the static clearance when the vehicle is at rest with a full fuel tank and no passengers. Actual clearance varies slightly depending on cargo load and suspension condition.

Where clearance matters in practice

Clearance determines what terrain a vehicle can navigate without damage. High clearance is essential for rough roads, fording shallow water, gravel tracks, and speed bumps. Low clearance means sharper suspension travel and bottoming out at obstacles; high clearance allows longer suspension stroke and better approach and departure angles. Vehicles designed for off-road use typically have 10 inches or more. City cars and sports cars with aggressive stance geometry often struggle on poorly maintained roads, driveways, and steep ramps.

Ground clearance also affects roll-over risk and center of gravity. A vehicle with 12 inches of clearance sits higher overall, shifting the mass upward. This is why the same wheelbase and track width on a lifted truck handles differently than on a lowered sedan. Manufacturers and engineers trade clearance against stability, fuel economy (lower is more aerodynamic), and ride comfort (lower is stiffer).

The term comes directly from the measurement process: you place a level straightedge across the ground beside the vehicle and measure the gap upward to the obstruction. In technical documentation, clearance is sometimes broken into front overhang clearance and rear overhang clearance to account for ramps and obstacles that may catch the bumper or tow hitch before the body contacts the ground.
