gunship: helicopter built around firepower, not transport
A gunship is a military helicopter purpose-designed to deliver sustained fire against ground targets. Unlike transport or utility helicopters that carry guns as secondary equipment, a gunship's airframe, weight distribution, seating, and systems all center on weapons employment. The helicopter hovers, orbits, or maneuvers to bring multiple guns or missiles to bear on a defined area, making it fundamentally different from a fast-attack aircraft that passes over a target once.
The most widely maintained gunship type is the AH-64 Apache, which carries a 30mm chain gun in a nose turret plus Hydra 70 rocket pods and Hellfire missiles on stub wings. Other examples include the AH-1 Cobra, which mounts a 20mm gun and various ordnance, and the AH-60 gunship variant of the Black Hawk. Each variant concentrates weight low and forward to support continuous gun employment without pitch-up or control loss. Ammunition feed systems, gun cooling lines, and fire-control hydraulics occupy space that transport helicopters use for cargo or passengers.
Maintenance demands differ sharply from general aviation. Gun systems require bore cleaning, ammunition-handling inspection, and feed-mechanism testing after every use cycle. Hydraulic lines endure higher pressure and cycling rates because gun turrets slew rapidly and ballistic compensation demand constant small corrections. Rotor blades and pitch-control linkages must tolerate the violent vibration created by firing heavy caliber weapons from a hovering platform. Vibration isolation mounts and dampers throughout the airframe wear faster than on unarmed aircraft.
Why the term matters in the maintenance trade
The label 'gunship' tells a technician immediately that this helicopter is stress-engineered for a particular job: sustained direct fire support. A mechanic walking a line sees an AH-64 and knows the nose turret mechanisms, gun hydraulics, and ammunition loops are critical path items. An airframe that looks structurally similar to a transport helicopter actually carries very different loads and stresses. Maintenance manuals for gunships segregate gun-system procedures from flight-control work because the two systems interact through vibration and require different troubleshooting trees.
Field strips and inspections follow attack helicopter logic: gun bore obstruction checks come before engine start; hydraulic pressure tests include gun-circuit isolation checks; and certain in-flight vibrations that would be logged as minor on a utility bird may indicate gun-system wear on a gunship. Parts commonality with transport variants is partial and sometimes misleading. A rotor blade may be nominally interchangeable, but fatigue-life tracking differs because gunship duty cycles include acceleration, deceleration, and weapon-firing maneuvers absent from cargo work.
