Hall class, a class of steam locomotive used on the GWR.

Hall: GWR's workhorse mixed-traffic 4-6-0 locomotive

The Hall class was a steam locomotive design that ran on Britain's Great Western Railway from 1924 onwards. It was a 4-6-0 type, meaning four small wheels at the front, six driving wheels in the middle, and two trailing wheels at the back. This wheel arrangement gave it the power to haul freight and the speed to handle passenger trains, making it one of the most versatile locomotives the GWR ever built.

The boiler produced steam at 225 pounds per square inch, and the two outside cylinders were 18.5 inches in diameter with a 26-inch stroke. A Hall could shift around 15 tons of tractive effort, which was respectable for a mixed-traffic engine of the 1920s. The class eventually numbered 259 locomotives, built over two decades at Swindon Works and by outside contractors. This made it one of the most numerous British locomotive classes.

Halls ran everything from stopping passenger trains to fitted freight, and they became the standard motive power across much of the GWR system. They were rugged enough to survive the Depression and the Second World War without major rebuilding. Some locomotives received improved superheaters and boilers late in their lives, but the basic design remained unchanged. A handful lasted into the 1960s on secondary routes, long after many other steam designs had been withdrawn.

The name comes from the GWR custom of naming locomotives after country houses and estates. Each engine bore a plaque with its designated hall, giving crews and railway workers a familiar reference rather than just a number. Famous examples included Hall 5000 Pendennis Castle, a demonstration locomotive that toured North America, and many others now preserved on heritage railways.

Compared to the smaller 4-4-0 tender engines that preceded them, Halls offered more adhesion and power. Compared to the heavier Castles, they were cheaper to build and faster to turn around for maintenance. This made them the natural choice for the dense network of branch lines and secondary services that made up the bulk of GWR traffic.
