In mine workings, the hanging side is the rock face above an inclined ore vein or seam. It is called hanging because it overhangs the work space, quite literally hanging above the miner's head. The opposite wall, below the vein, is the footwall. This terminology applies to any inclined mineral body, whether a metalliferous vein, a coal seam, or a layer of industrial minerals. The angle of dip determines how steeply one wall overhangs the other.

The practical importance of distinguishing hanging side from footwall lies in ground control and ore extraction. When a vein dips at a shallow angle, the hanging side may span many metres horizontally and pose a significant fall-of-ground risk if not properly supported. Conversely, a near-vertical vein has minimal overhang and simpler support requirements. Stope designs, pillar placement, and roof bolting patterns all depend on knowing which wall is which and how much it projects into the working area.

Stability and stress patterns

The hanging side typically experiences greater stress concentration than the footwall, particularly where the vein is thin or the rock quality is poor. Water seepage along the contact between vein and host rock often weakens the hanging side first. In underground mining, timbers, props, or roof supports are positioned to carry the weight of the hanging side and prevent sudden failure. The term is equally used in open-pit mining, where the hanging wall angle controls the safe slope of the excavation pit itself.

Regional geological conventions sometimes vary the terminology. In some coal-mining districts, alternative local terms exist, but hanging side and footwall remain the standard usage across most metalliferous and industrial mineral operations. The name is purely descriptive: it refers to the side that hangs above the workplace, without reference to ownership, ore grade, or mining method.
