A hard is a sloped concrete, timber, or gravel surface that runs from the water's edge up a beach or riverbank, designed to support the weight of vessels being hauled out of the water or launched back in. It serves as a permanent landing place where ships can be beached, careened, repaired, or stored without sinking into soft sand or mud. The surface must be compacted and stable enough to bear the enormous distributed load of a hull settling onto it, typically reinforced with concrete piles, sheet piling, or carefully graded stone.
Hards vary greatly in scale and construction depending on the vessels they serve. A small working hard for fishing boats or workboats might be 50 to 100 meters long and 10 to 20 meters wide, made of reinforced concrete with a gradient between 1:8 and 1:12 to allow safe hauling and launching. Larger shipyard hards can exceed 300 meters in length. The slope is critical: too steep and vessels will slide uncontrollably; too shallow and they will not float freely at the top of the tide. Hards are almost always angled rather than vertical, distinguishing them from the quays and wharves used for moored vessels.
Hauling operations on a hard traditionally use either a system of chains and a stationary winch (a slipway or marine railway) or, for smaller craft, simply drag the vessel up with tractors or bulldozers running on the hard's surface itself. Modern hards often incorporate a grid of drainage channels to shed water and prevent pooling. The surface degrades from constant friction, the corrosive salt environment, and the weight of vessels and heavy machinery, so regular resurfacing with concrete or bituminous material is necessary every 10 to 15 years depending on use.
The term appears in maritime and shipyard vocabulary across European languages with essentially identical meaning. In North America, such a facility might be called a marine railway, launching ramp, or haul-out, though hard persists in some regional traditions. A hard is distinct from a slipway proper, which typically includes permanent rails and carriages, though the terms are sometimes conflated. The word itself derives from the firmness or hardness of the surface, contrasting with muddy or sandy beach.
Hards remain essential infrastructure at working boatyards, naval establishments, and repair facilities worldwide. Maintenance of a hard is labor-intensive and expensive because the constant wet, salt, and mechanical stress cause rapid deterioration of any surface. Poor drainage, inadequate slope maintenance, or surface cracking will trap water and accelerate damage, quickly rendering a hard unsafe for valuable vessels.
