The waist is the amidships section of the upper deck on a ship, running from where the forecastle ends forward to where the quarterdeck begins aft. On a traditional sailing vessel, it is the open working deck that connects the raised platforms at bow and stern, typically the widest and most exposed part of the main deck. This is where much of the crew's labour happened: handling cargo, working rigging, swabbing, and securing loose gear.

The waist's boundaries are architectural and functional rather than strictly measured. The forecastle rises above it at the bow; the quarterdeck rises above it at the stern. The transition is marked by breaks in the deck level. On a ship of the line or large merchant vessel, the waist could span 30 to 50 feet or more, depending on the overall length and design. Smaller vessels may have only a modest waist, or none at all if the deck runs continuously fore and aft.

Because the waist sits lower than the forecastle and quarterdeck, it is the first section to ship water in heavy seas. Gun crews on warships stationed in the waist during action were exposed to spray and boarding attack. The open design made it versatile: cargo could be hoisted down through hatches into the hold below, and the crew had room to move lines and canvas. In rough weather, the waist was also the point where the hull flexed most, creating structural stress on the deck itself.

The term appears consistently in ship design from the 16th century onward, used in both naval architecture and everyday shipboard speech. A sailor ordered to the waist knew he was going to the working deck amidships, away from the command zones aft and the specialized forecastle space forward. In modern vessel design, the terminology has faded as continuous main decks became standard, but the waist remains a useful historical and descriptive term in naval architecture and maritime preservation.
