haulier: the underground carrier in deep mines
In deep coal mines, a haulier is a worker whose job is to move extracted coal from the working face toward the shaft bottom or collection point. The haulier operates between the coalface, where hewers or cutters do the primary extraction, and the main roadway or tramway that feeds the winding apparatus. This is the crucial middle link in the chain that gets coal from working depth to the surface.
The physical mechanics depend on pit layout and era. In older workings, hauliers moved coal in tubs or boxes pushed or pulled along wooden or metal rails by hand or by pony. Later operations used mechanical haulage: endless rope systems running through mines, powered from the surface by steam or electric motors. A haulier would couple full tubs to the moving rope or manually detach empty ones at collection points. The work demanded strength, local knowledge of the roadway, and quick coupling and uncoupling under poor light.
Hierarchy and conditions
Hauliers occupied a distinct rung in the underground workforce. They earned more than the youngest miners or water haulers, but less than skilled hewers. The role was often held by teenagers and young men; it was a route into the pit before advancing to cutting work. Ventilation was often poorest along haulage roads, since air flowed to the faces first. Rope accidents, crushed fingers and hands, and falls on uneven ground were common injuries.
The term is now historical, surviving mainly in miners' memoirs and local industrial heritage. Mechanized continuous haulage systems and purpose-built mine infrastructure reduced the need for this labour-intensive job from the mid-twentieth century onward. The word itself comes simply from the verb haul: one who hauls coal is a haulier, parallel to the formation of hewer (one who hews) or sinker (one who sinks shafts).
