haylage

A type of silage with a high dry-matter content, made from the same grasses or legumes from which hay is made (such as alfalfa, timothy, and others) but not dried as much as hay nor as little as direct-chop/green-chop silage (before being ensiled).

Haylage is fermented forage made from grasses or legumes cut and left to wilt in the field until they reach 40 to 60 percent dry matter, then packed into storage without additional moisture. It occupies a deliberate middle ground between hay (80+ percent dry matter) and wet silage (30 percent dry matter or less). The name itself, a contraction of 'hay' and 'silage', reflects this hybrid nature. A typical load might be cut alfalfa or mixed timothy and clover, left to cure for one to three days depending on weather, then chopped and densely packed in bags, bunkers, or wrapped bales.

The fermentation chemistry differs sharply from both its parent categories. Wet silage relies on anaerobic bacteria to convert sugars to lactic acid quickly, which lowers pH and preserves the crop even at moisture levels that would risk mold in storage. Hay depends on drying to around 15 percent moisture, which halts microbial activity altogether. Haylage splits this: its moderate moisture content allows fermentation to occur, but more slowly and with less acid production than wet silage. This means it must be packed tightly and sealed properly, or aerobic spoilage will begin within days of exposure to air.

Equipment for haylage production mirrors conventional hay-making: a cutting bar, tedder or rake, forage wagon with chopper, and packing machinery. The critical difference is timing and judgment. A farmer cannot simply cut and leave material in the sun for five days as with hay; the wilting window is tighter, typically one to three days depending on humidity, temperature, and wind. Rain during cure is more forgiving than for hay but riskier than for wet silage. Moisture content at chop must be known or estimated with some precision. Baling density matters more than with hay; under-packed haylage may heat internally and lose nutritional value.

Why haylage gained ground: it offers a genuine advantage in marginal weather. In regions with humid summers or unpredictable rainfall, achieving the 15 to 20 percent moisture target for stable dry hay is unreliable. Haylage can be made in shorter windows and stored reliably if packed correctly. Nutritionally, it retains more of the crop's digestibility than field-dried hay because the plant's cellular structure has not been damaged by over-drying. Livestock (especially dairy cattle) often consume it at higher intakes than equivalent dry hay.

Storage failure is the main risk. Haylage that ferments correctly develops a characteristic sharp, vinegar-like smell and a pale or tan color; the interior should be anaerobic and stable for months. Haylage exposed to air, or packed too loosely, undergoes aerobic decomposition: it heats, darkens, may grow visible mold, and loses feed value rapidly. Poor sealing of wrapped bales, punctures in bags during storage, or inadequate density in bunks are common causes. Feeding haylage requires careful management too; once a bale is opened or a bunker is exposed to air, spoilage resumes, so daily feed amounts must be realistic to consumption.

In the feed inventory, haylage occupies space between a convenience (wet silage, which can be made on wet days) and an aspiration (dry hay, which stores indefinitely but demands dry weather). It has become standard in dairy regions with marginal hay-making climates and in operations where labor or equipment can handle the intermediate drying step but not the full dry-hay operation. Nutritionists value it because its digestibility is usually superior to traditional hay and more consistent from batch to batch than silage, which can vary widely depending on fermentation success.
