HBT: the weave that built military workwear

Herringbone twill is a diagonal weave pattern where the direction of the twill reverses row by row, creating a distinctive zigzag visual effect that resembles a herringbone floor or a fish skeleton. The resulting fabric is dense, durable, and resistant to fraying along the bias. HBT has been manufactured commercially since the early twentieth century and became the standard cloth for military fatigues, work trousers, and field uniforms across multiple armed forces.

The weave itself uses cotton, sometimes blended with polyester for modern versions. Traditional military HBT runs approximately 8 to 10 ounces per square yard and is woven on power looms using a four harness twill construction. The reversal of the twill direction happens at intervals, typically every 2 to 4 picks (horizontal threads), which produces the characteristic V-shaped pattern. This structural alternation distributes stress across the weave more evenly than a simple twill, reducing the tendency of the fabric to fold or bunch along stress lines.

HBT's reputation rests on its resistance to wear and its capacity to withstand repeated washing without significant degradation. The tight weave sheds lint poorly, which matters when the garment needs to stay clean in field conditions. The diagonal bias also resists tearing better than plain weaves. These properties made HBT the preferred material for combat trousers, work shirts, and utility jackets where garments endure snagging, abrasion, and heavy laundering.

Modern HBT is often treated with a shrink-resistant finish and sometimes receives a light starch or sizing to improve handle and crispness. However, poor storage in damp conditions or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading and loss of dimensional stability. Repeated washing in hot water gradually softens the hand of the fabric, though this is often preferred by end users.

HBT remains in production for military, law enforcement, and civilian workwear, though it competes with lighter ripstop fabrics and synthetic blends in modern tactical applications. The term is now used loosely to describe any herringbone twill garment, regardless of fiber content or weight, and appears on product labels as a selling point because the weave pattern is immediately recognizable and associated with durability and heritage.
