In manufacturing, a hat is a conical or domed cover fitted over the top end of a rotating spindle, shaft, or arbor. It serves as both a protective cover and a visual indicator of machine state. The hat shields the spindle nose from dust, coolant mist, and debris during operation, and prevents operators from accidentally contacting rotating parts. On many machine tools, the hat is removed to access the spindle nose for tool changes or to install chucks and collets.
The term comes from its obvious shape: a cone or dome that resembles a hat placed on a head. The analogy is so natural that the name persists across dozens of languages and machine tool traditions. The hat typically sits loose enough to slide off by hand, held in place only by gravity and light friction, rather than being permanently attached or threaded on.
Hats appear on lathe spindles, milling machine spindles, and grinding machine spindles. On a lathe, the hat covers the tailstock quill when it is fully retracted. On vertical mills, the hat sits atop the main spindle housing. Different machines require hats of different diameters and heights depending on spindle nose geometry. A worn or damaged hat that does not slide freely can jam against the spindle housing during retraction, causing operator frustration and occasional damage to the machine.
Materials vary by application. Plastic hats are common on smaller machines and training equipment because they are light and safe. Cast iron or aluminum hats are found on older industrial machines and heavy-duty equipment where durability matters more than weight. Some shops lose or discard hats and run machines without them, accepting the risk of contamination and contact hazards in exchange for one less part to manage.
