In aviation maintenance, a heavy aircraft is one certified for a maximum takeoff weight above 300,000 pounds, typically a widebody jet like a Boeing 777, Airbus A350, or Airbus A380. The category matters because these machines demand dedicated equipment, reinforced ramps, specialized tug power, and trained personnel who understand their unique structural and mechanical demands. A heavy aircraft cannot be serviced at a standard regional gate; it requires a main line hangar with adequate floor load rating and overhead hoist capacity.
The distinction exists primarily for air traffic control and safety separation; the FAA classifies heavies separately to enforce minimum wake turbulence spacing behind them during takeoff and landing. For the maintenance technician, heavy classification signals operational complexity. Hydraulic systems operate at higher pressures. Landing gear design is heavier gauge steel with more actuators. Fuel tank access requires more cutouts in the fuselage. Landing gear down locks, nose wheel steering systems, and cargo door mechanisms all scale up in force and response time.
Ground support and depot work
Heavy aircraft require towbarless tug systems or tow tugs rated for 200,000 pounds or more of towing force. Wheel changes demand larger presses and longer wrench handles. Engine changes on a heavy widebody often require a nose-up tilt of 15 degrees or more to gain clearance; technicians must work at height and manage fuel slosh and fluid spill zones. C-checks and D-checks on heavies can run 30,000 to 50,000 labor hours and occupy a hangar for 4 to 8 weeks.
Common failure modes in heavy aircraft maintenance include landing gear actuator drift, which occurs at higher loads over time, and corrosion in sealed compartments that grow larger in widebody fuselages. Pressurization cycles on heavies operating long-haul routes accumulate stress; fuselage skin cracks initiate at rivet holes and panel fastener points. Maintenance crews learn quickly that a structural repair on a 400-ton aircraft cannot wait for parts or improvisation.
The term heavy is purely operational, not a design philosophy. Some large cargo conversions of narrow-body aircraft do not qualify as heavy by weight alone. Conversely, a small supersonic or military jet might be heavy for its size due to fuel fraction and structural margins. In the hangar, knowing whether you are working on a heavy means knowing whether your facility, your tools, and your schedule assumptions apply.
