A heavy vehicle is any motor vehicle that exceeds the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) set by national or regional transport authorities. In most jurisdictions this threshold sits between 3,500 kg and 5,000 kg, though the exact figure varies by country and class. Vehicles crossing this line, whether laden or unladen, enter a different regulatory, licensing, and insurance framework from ordinary cars and light vans.

The category encompasses articulated trucks (semis), rigid-frame cargo lorries, buses and coaches, livestock transporters, car carriers, tankers, and specialized vehicles like concrete mixers or mobile cranes. A fully loaded pickup truck or tradesman's van might legally remain light-duty; the same vehicle operating at its maximum payload capacity might tip into heavy classification. This distinction matters because it determines driver training requirements, rest period rules, emissions standards, and road tolls.

Regulation and enforcement

Heavy vehicles typically require professional class licensing (HGV, CDL, or equivalent) and are subject to regular mechanical testing, tachograph recording of driving hours, and strict payload limits per axle. Overloading is a high-risk violation because it degrades braking performance, increases tire failure risk, and accelerates suspension wear. Enforcement agencies use portable weighing stations and in-cab scales to verify compliance.

The definition exists because heavy vehicles pose greater accident risk due to stopping distance, cargo shift potential, and jackknife susceptibility. A 40-tonne articulated truck traveling at 100 km/h requires roughly 200 metres to stop safely. Regulation of maintenance, driver fatigue, and load security directly addresses these hazards. The term itself reflects practical engineering: beyond a certain mass and axle loading, standard suspension and braking systems no longer provide adequate control.

In commercial fleets, heavy vehicle operating costs include fuel consumption between 6 and 12 litres per 100 kilometres depending on load and engine type, scheduled maintenance every 20,000 to 50,000 km, and tire replacement every 100,000 to 150,000 km. Operators track these metrics closely because fuel and maintenance represent 30 to 50 percent of total running costs.
