A helitorch is a specialized ignition apparatus mounted on or operated from a helicopter, designed to ignite fuel on the ground below during prescribed burns and wildfire suppression operations. The device typically consists of a fuel hopper, ignition mechanism, and dispersal tube that allows a pilot or crew member to deploy burning material (usually gelled gasoline or specially formulated pellets) at controlled intervals as the helicopter moves across a target area. This enables rapid and precise ignition across difficult terrain where ground crews cannot safely or efficiently operate.

The most common configuration uses a drip-torch principle adapted for aerial use, where heated fuel flows through a nozzle and ignites on contact with air, dropping burning material in a pattern determined by the helicopter's speed and altitude. Operators can control ignition rate and stop flow instantly, making it possible to create specific fire patterns rather than indiscriminate coverage. Modern systems allow the pilot to actuate the device via foot pedal or lever, keeping hands on flight controls and eyes on terrain.

Operational constraints and effectiveness

Helitorch operations require favorable wind conditions, visibility, and fuel moisture levels. Typical burn patterns are executed at 50 to 100 feet altitude and 15 to 25 miles per hour forward speed, though these parameters vary with aircraft type, fuel formulation, and terrain. The device works best in fuel types where ignition is reliable and fire behavior is predictable, such as grass, light brush, and timber slash. Dense or very wet fuel presents ignition challenges; too-thick coverage creates spotting risks.

Weather and equipment variables affect safety and efficiency significantly. Wind shifts can push flames toward unintended areas; turbulence near terrain can prevent precise placement. Mechanical failures in fuel lines, ignition elements, or flow control create both operational delays and potential hazards. The high cost of helicopter operations (fuel, crew, maintenance) means helitorch burns are typically reserved for large acreages where the speed and coverage justify the expense, or for terrain where ground ignition is unsafe or impossible.

Helitorch use originated in the western United States for land management agencies managing large forest and grassland areas. It has become standard for reducing fuel loads ahead of fire season and for creating firebreaks in suppression efforts. The technique is less common in regions with smaller ownership parcels or where prescribed burn windows are limited, and it remains a specialized tool requiring trained aviation personnel and coordination with state forestry agencies.
