A holding pattern is a predetermined flight path, typically circular or racetrack-shaped, that an aircraft follows while waiting for landing clearance. The pattern occurs at a specific altitude and geographic location, usually between 1,000 and 10,000 feet, and can be entered and exited by aircraft on standard descent or climb procedures. Air traffic control assigns a holding pattern to manage flow into an airport during periods of congestion, runway occupancy, or weather delays.

Standard holding patterns in the United States follow rules set by the Federal Aviation Administration: the aircraft holds to the right of the inbound course unless otherwise specified, completes a turn no steeper than 15 degrees of bank, and uses a one-minute inbound leg at speeds below 6,000 feet and a one-minute-thirty-second inbound leg above 6,000 feet. Holding fix locations are marked on approach charts and typically lie on navigation aids such as VORs (VHF omnidirectional ranges) or fixes defined by intersecting radials. Pilots slow to holding speed, commonly 200 knots or less depending on altitude.

Fuel and workload implications

Extended holding burns fuel at a predictable rate, so dispatch and flight planning software calculates holding fuel separately from cruise and descent reserves. Each additional minute in holding consumes roughly 8 to 15 pounds of fuel depending on aircraft type and weight. Maintenance crews and flight crews track holding time to ensure legal fuel reserves remain available. Multiple aircraft can occupy the same holding pattern at different altitudes without conflict, separated vertically by 1,000 feet minimum.

From an operational standpoint, a holding pattern reduces pilot and controller workload during ground delays. Pilots follow a mechanized, repeatable path rather than receiving continuous vectors. However, extended holds increase fatigue and create cascading delays downstream; an aircraft holding for 45 minutes may miss its original approach slot and require reassignment. Real-world holding durations range from a few minutes to over an hour during severe weather or airport capacity events.

The term originates from the aircraft's literal action: holding its position in a geometric loop rather than descending or deviating widely. Holding is distinct from a visual pattern flown during approach near an airport; a holding pattern operates at distance and altitude, governed entirely by published procedure and ATC clearance. Understanding holding patterns is essential for flight crews planning fuel and time reserves, and for maintenance personnel scheduling aircraft availability when delays are anticipated.
