Hubble: a reflecting telescope in orbit

A hubble is a space-based reflecting telescope, typically of the type pioneered by the Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990. The term has entered optical and imaging trade language as a descriptor for large orbital observatories that use primary mirrors rather than refracting lenses, and that operate above the distortion caused by Earth's atmosphere. In practice, the word carries connotations of high resolution, long-duration stability, and autonomous operation in vacuum.

The defining feature of any hubble-class instrument is a large concave primary mirror, usually made from low-expansion glass or composites, coupled with a secondary mirror that directs light toward focal instruments. The original Hubble telescope used a 2.4 meter primary mirror; modern hubble-derived designs may be smaller for specialist tasks or larger for next-generation observations. The optical path must be sealed and evacuated to prevent thermal distortion and atmospheric scattering that would degrade image quality at wavelengths from infrared through ultraviolet.

Optical performance and thermal management

Image quality in a hubble depends critically on mirror alignment, thermal stability, and vibration isolation. The primary mirror must hold its shape to within a fraction of the observing wavelength; thermal gradients across the structure cause micro-deformation that ruins resolution. Reaction wheels or gyroscopes provide pointing stability; on-orbit servicing missions or corrective optics in the focal plane compensate for manufacturing tolerances or degradation. The original Hubble required a corrective lens after launch because of a spherical aberration in the primary mirror, a lesson that influenced design protocols for subsequent instruments.

The term has also been applied loosely to certain military reconnaissance satellites that employ similar optical architectures, though these remain classified. In civilian astronomy, variants include the James Webb Space Telescope (infrared-optimized, with a segmented mirror) and proposed ultraviolet missions. The hubble design trades off the simplicity of ground-based telescopes against the expense and operational constraints of orbital deployment, but delivers image sharpness impossible from Earth's surface.
