A hudge is a robust cylindrical or slightly tapered metal bucket used to hoist coal, ore, or waste rock from underground mines to the surface. Suspended from a rope or cable attached to a winding engine, it serves as the primary conveyance vessel in shaft mining operations. The bucket descends empty, gets loaded at the mine floor, and returns to surface where its contents are dumped. This simple mechanism has remained fundamentally unchanged for centuries, though materials and scale have evolved.

Hudges are typically fabricated from wrought iron or steel sheet, typically 3 to 5 millimeters thick, formed into a cylindrical body with a flat or slightly dished bottom. Capacity varies widely depending on the shaft depth and haulage system, ranging from around 5 cubic feet in shallow or narrow shafts to 20 cubic feet or more in modern deep mines. The bucket's top edge is reinforced with an iron band, and suspension is achieved through lugs or ears welded or riveted to opposite sides of the rim. Two ropes or chains attached to these lugs distribute the load evenly during the violent shock of landing and loading.

The principal wear points are the bottom corners, where ore and rock cause abrasion and eventual perforation, and the lug attachment points, where stress concentration during impact can cause metal fatigue and failure. Mining operators must inspect hudges regularly and replace them when the bottom thickness drops below safe limits, typically when perforation begins or when metal loss exceeds 20 to 30 percent of original thickness. A failed hudge can dump its load partway up the shaft, creating serious hazard and production loss.

Variants and regional practice

Straight-sided buckets are preferred for general ore and coal work because they stack and move more predictably. Slightly conical buckets with sloping sides became common in coal mining because they dump more reliably and resist wedging in the shaft when partially full. Some operations used a flared lip at the top to reduce spillage during loading and transport. In very deep shafts, where impact shock becomes severe, buckets were made thicker and heavier, with reinforced lugs.

The term 'hudge' is primarily British and Northern European mining vocabulary; North American operations more often used 'bucket' or 'kibble'. The etymology is obscure, though the word appears in English mining texts from at least the 17th century. Its persistence reflects the essential simplicity of the device: a bucket does one job well, and that job has not fundamentally changed since mines began operating in depth.
