Saloon: the passenger seating area of a train carriage

A saloon is the main cabin or compartment of a railway carriage or multiple unit where passengers sit during transit. It is distinct from the driving cab, luggage areas, toilets, and vestibules. The term originates from ship terminology and remains standard in British and European railway vocabulary, though North American railways typically use 'coach' or 'car' instead.

Saloons vary considerably in configuration depending on service type and era. A suburban or commuter saloon typically features transverse seating (rows facing sideways along the train length) with high passenger density; intercity saloons often have longitudinal seating (rows facing forward and backward) with wider seats and more legroom. Open saloons have few or no internal partitions, while compartment stock divides passengers into enclosed cabins accessed from side corridors.

Modern saloons are designed around passenger capacity targets, often expressed as standees per square metre. A crowded commuter multiple unit may accommodate 5 to 7 standees per m² during peak hours. Ventilation, lighting, and heating are essential systems; poor air circulation creates discomfort on long journeys and can trigger complaints to operators. Flooring must resist heavy foot traffic and spilled liquids; many modern saloons use anti-slip vinyl or rubber composite materials.

Design and maintenance pressures

The saloon interior deteriorates through constant use. Upholstery on seats wears rapidly; foam cushioning compresses, vinyl covers split, and staining accumulates. Grab rails, poles, and handholds work loose. Windows scratch or crack. Operators budget heavily for refurbishment: replacing seat covers, repainting, and fitting new flooring can extend a carriage's life by 10 to 15 years before more extensive overhaul becomes necessary.

Modern saloon design must balance contradictory demands: maximizing seating density while maintaining passenger comfort, reducing cleaning time and cost while improving hygiene, and meeting accessibility regulations for wheelchair users and elderly passengers. These pressures drive experimentation with modular seating, antimicrobial materials, and flexible layouts that can adapt to peak and off-peak demand.
