Jet lag is a temporary misalignment between the body's internal circadian clock and the external time environment. When an aircraft crosses multiple time zones in a single flight, the passenger's biological systems, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, and digestive function, remain anchored to the departure timezone while external cues (sunrise, meal times, social activity) shift abruptly. The faster the crossing, the more acute the disruption. A crew member flying westbound from London to New York crosses five time zones in roughly seven hours; the body cannot adjust that quickly.

Pilots and flight attendants experience jet lag regularly and it directly affects job performance. Fatigue, reduced alertness, impaired decision-making, and degraded situational awareness are documented consequences. Aviation authorities recognize this risk. The Federal Aviation Administration and EASA impose mandatory rest periods and limit flight duty times, particularly after rapid transmeridian crossings. These regulations exist because circadian desynchronization cannot be overcome by willpower or caffeine; the adjustment requires repeated exposure to local light-dark cycles, typically one day per timezone hour crossed.

Adaptation and Mitigation

Eastbound flights cause worse jet lag than westbound flights of equal distance because the human circadian rhythm is slightly longer than 24 hours and resists phase advances more than phase delays. A London-to-Singapore eastbound routing (9 hours flight time, 8 timezones) creates more disruption than the reverse. Industry practice includes pre-flight sleep optimization, strategic light exposure timing, and controlled melatonin use, though effectiveness varies by individual. Some operators schedule crew rosters to minimize short-turnaround transmeridian pairings.

The term itself entered common usage in the 1960s as commercial jet aircraft made transoceanic flight routine. Before jets, ships and trains allowed gradual timezone adjustment; the jet made rapid crossing medically problematic. The condition is not unique to flight crews, but aviation maintenance and flight operations personnel bear particular operational risk because judgment lapses can affect safety. Ground maintenance technicians on rotating international schedules and dispatch staff managing 24-hour operations encounter identical circadian strain, though without the acute phase shift of actual flight.
