jhum: slash-and-burn farming in the Indian northeast
Jhum, also called shifting cultivation or swidden agriculture, is a cycle of forest clearance, cropping, and fallow that has been practiced for centuries in the hill regions of northeast India, particularly in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. A farmer selects a plot of forest or secondary growth, cuts down trees and vegetation, allows it to dry, then burns the debris to release nutrients into the soil. Crops such as rice, maize, millet, and beans are planted directly into the ash-enriched ground for two to four years until soil fertility drops, at which point the land is abandoned to regenerate and the farmer moves to a new plot.
The system depends on a long rotation cycle, historically fifteen to twenty years or more, which allowed cleared land to recover under natural regrowth. Soil health relies on this fallow period: the returning forest rebuilds organic matter, fixes nitrogen through legumes, and restores mineral balance. The burn itself kills pests and pathogens while making locked nutrients available for immediate crop uptake. Labor input is high during clearing and burning seasons, but the soil requires no external inputs such as fertilizer or tillage equipment once the ash is worked in.
Why the cycle breaks down
Jhum becomes destructive when population pressure shortens the fallow period to five to ten years or less. Degraded land recovers poorly, yields decline, and farmers must clear new forest faster than it can regenerate. This has driven large-scale deforestation across northeast India since the mid-twentieth century, destroying watershed function, wildlife habitat, and carbon stocks. Simultaneously, soil erosion on steep hillsides accelerates when fallow vegetation is removed before reestablishment.
The term comes from the Mizo word meaning to shift or move. In colonial documentation and modern Indian policy, jhum is often classed as unproductive or wasteful, though agronomists recognize it as a rational adaptation to steep terrain, poor road access, and labor constraints where mechanized agriculture is impractical. Modern efforts to stabilize the system focus on extending fallow periods through agroforestry, introducing permanent tree crops such as rubber or citrus, and improving market access to make intensified production viable without forest conversion.
