Oatlage is silage produced from oat plants harvested at the milk to soft-dough stage of grain development. Unlike conventional hay, which requires dry conditions, oatlage is chopped wet and stored anaerobically in silos or wrapped bales where natural fermentation preserves the forage. The fermentation process produces organic acids that arrest decomposition and preserve nutritive value, making oatlage a reliable winter feed in wet climates or regions where traditional hay curing is unreliable.

Oats used for oatlage are cut at a younger stage than grain crops, typically when the plant contains 60 to 70 percent moisture. This timing captures higher digestibility than mature oat straw while retaining the grain component in the developing head, which boosts energy and protein content compared to oat straw alone. The resulting silage has a dry matter content between 25 and 40 percent depending on harvest moisture and chopping fineness.

Oatlage may be stored in upright tower silos, horizontal bunker silos, or plastic-wrapped round or rectangular bales. Bunker silos are most common on larger operations because they accommodate the volume efficiently and allow flexible removal rates. Bag silos and wrapped bales suit smaller farms or operations requiring portability. Proper packing eliminates air pockets and ensures anaerobic conditions; poorly packed silage spoils at the surface or develops mold during storage or feedout.

The fermentation quality depends on chopping length, moisture content, and storage method. Oats ferment readily due to adequate carbohydrate content and natural bacteria; however, heating, clostridial fermentation, or visible mold indicates poor conditions during harvest, storage, or removal. Livestock consuming poor-quality oatlage show reduced intake and performance. Testing fermentation end-products (pH, volatile fatty acids) is standard practice in commercial feeding operations.

Oatlage fits into mixed forage systems where spring and early-summer oat plantings provide emergency or supplemental feed when perennial forages are limited. It suits dairy and beef operations alike; the typical feeding rate is 20 to 40 pounds of fresh oatlage per head per day depending on body weight and diet composition. The term itself blends 'oat' with the '-lage' suffix from 'silage,' following the pattern of 'haylage' and other crop silage variants.
