Jubilee
A London Underground line which runs between Stratford in East London and Stanmore in northwest London, via the London Docklands, South Bank, and West End.

The Jubilee Line is a London Underground railway opened in stages between 1979 and 1999, running 23.2 miles from Stanmore in the northwest to Stratford in the east. It passes through central London via Bank, Waterloo, and London Bridge, serving the South Bank and Docklands areas. The line is named after Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977, though construction began after that celebration had passed.
The original Metropolitan Line branch from Baker Street to Stanmore, opened in 1932, formed the nucleus. In 1979 this section was reclassified and extended southward to Charing Cross. The modern extension eastward, completed in 1999, added the most distinctive stretch: viaducts across the Thames, the timber-decked platforms at Canary Wharf, and a loop serving the Docklands. This eastern section required deeper tunnelling and more substantial civil engineering than the shallow Victorian tunnels of the 1932 section.
The line uses standard gauge track, 4 feet 8.5 inches, with a third rail electrical supply at 630 volts DC. Trains are typically nine-car formations of the 1996 stock type, though older 1972 stock operated the original Stanmore branch until 2010. The Jubilee carries around 200 million journeys annually, making it one of the busiest Underground lines.
Operational characteristics and challenges
The line's geometry presents operational constraints. The transition from the shallow 1932 tunnels to deeper bore sections requires careful alignment, and the 1999 extension includes some of the steepest gradients on the Underground at around 1 in 40. Station spacing varies from 800 feet at some central locations to over 3000 feet on the Jubilee extension. The viaduct sections through the Docklands experience more weather exposure and require different maintenance regimes from traditional tube tunnels.
The Jubilee Line represents a shift in Underground investment philosophy toward outer London connectivity and regeneration of derelict areas, particularly the Docklands. It differs from earlier lines built primarily to move commuters into central London; instead it routes traffic around and across the centre, easing pressure on the Circle, Northern, and District lines.
